Lent is about preparing for Easter. Easter is about new life in Christ through Baptism. Therefore, in a very real way, Lent is about preparing to renew our baptismal promises on Easter Sunday. Today's reading manifests this reality. It is the 1st Sunday of Lent and we hear Jesus as He "rejects satan and all his false promises".
Now, something to consider is that Jesus does not act merely in an isolated moment in history. Rather, He sums up in Himself ALL of salvation history, God's total Revelation of Himself. Therefore, while Jesus is in the desert He is there for and with all of humanity - from the Garden to Gethsemane to Glory. We have the privilege of living between Gethsemane and Final Glory, and so we have the privilege of being able to unite ourselves with Christ, who has already secured the victory over satan.
However, this means a union that does not pick and choose, but is intimate and consistent. It mean rejecting satan and all his false promises. We must be 100% dependent on the Father for our daily bread, withstanding the trials by fire He sometimes asks us to endure. We must have a peaceful servant/Master relationship with the Lord of all, not demanding miracles or doubting His fidelity. We must love Him above all else, all people, all places, and all things.
In conclusion, let us prepare for Easter Sunday. Prepare to reject satan with and in our Living God. Turn to the Immaculata, whose heel is already upon his cunning head.
