Back to Baptism

In the human soul there is an intense longing to be happy. We are wired for happiness. Our will and our intellect, that is those parts in us that do the choosing, reasoning, and knowing, are all oriented toward happiness. So strong is our desire for happiness, that really whatever makes us truly happy is called Good.

Now, we know from experience that this is true. The problem comes in with the fall of our human nature. We are born into a rather foggy atmosphere. It isn't always clear what will make us happy, that is, it is not always clear what is Good. There are two reasons we cannot underestimate this reality. 1. Judgement of others faults and failings will become habitual and seriously flawed. 2. We will not appreciate the grace given to us. I speak here specifically of the grace of Baptism.

At Baptism we received the theological virtues. These virtues orient us to God, our supernatural end. Faith, Hope, and Love give light to the will and intellect, making it possible for us mere mortals to KNOW and to LOVE God. The grace of Baptism does not make life a piece of cake; they actually call us to a high standard of virtuous living.

But, at Baptism this high standard of living is made possible, because we are infused (incense lingering in the air, permeating everything) with grace - the Presence of God. We are changed, and just as importantly, disposed to constant transformation  into Him.

We are all created in His Image, and to the degree that we live virtuously we will be like Him and most perfectly reflect that Image. Christ has shown us the way, Baptism has made it possible, now it is up to us to put our hope in the Resurrection and go forward with unbridled passion for our God.
