Before you get upset at the direct language, think about it a moment. What are we celebrating today? The Visitation. And, what do we celebrate?
We celebrate Mary the first missionary of Christ.
We celebrate Mary the woman who believed God's promises.
We celebrate Mary the joyful.
We celebrate the baptism of St. John the Baptist.
All of this is rich in meaning, but when push comes to shove, we're brought back to what set so much in motion: A young, pregnant woman unselfishly went to visit her cousin. It's that simple. There would be no missionary, no fidelity, less joy, and no baptism if Mary was not first loving. It may be difficult to relate to Mary in so many ways, but maybe that's because we haven't followed faithfully her first step.
Maybe we too will be faithful, joyful missionaries, if we say "Yes" - and without another thought turn our hearts and hands towards someone who needs a little help.
Our faith is utterly, beautifully simple. Just live it.
