On November 27, 1830 Our Lady appeared to St. Catherine Laboure and manifested the Divine Will for a Medal struck in the image that we now so commonly call the "Miraculous Medal". Originally a devotional honoring the Immaculate Conception, it gained its current name due to the great number of miracles that occured - particularly of a spiritual nature - for those who carried or distributed them.
To learn more about this occasion, I invite to go to http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/10115a.htm.
At present, I wish to make clear the role of the Miraculous Medal in the Kolbean Spirituality, and in particular why St. Maximilian Kolbe made carrying the medal a condition for membership in the Militia of the Immaculata:
"...Distribute the Miraculous Medal wherever it is possible, also to the children to wear around the neck always, to the elderly, and above all to the young people. Under Her protection they have sufficient strength to push away the innumerable temptations and pitfalls that are imposed on them in our times. Even to those that never enter a church, that are afraid to approach confession, that ridicule religious practices, that laugh at the truth of the faith, that are immersed in the mud of immorality or live in heresy outside of the Church: oh! it is absolutely indispensable to offer the medal of the Immaculata to these and urge them to willingly carry it, and at the same time, to fervently beg the Immaculata for their conversion. Many are able to reach this goal even when someone absolutely does not want to accept - in any way - the Medal. Even by hiding it in their clothing, and praying, sooner or later the Immaculata shows them what they can do.* The Miraculous Medal, therefore, is the bullet of the Militia of the Immaculuta... When, O Immaculata, will strike that blessed hour, in which every single heart will love You sincerely and, loving You, burn with love for the Most Sacred Heard of God our Savior?"**
